Fast Fact: Becoming a lever of change
As a principal, Von Sheppard led a lot of improvement at his school. Now, as an assistant superintendent in Boulder, Colo., his job is to help other principals become levers of change and improvement in their respective schools.
Beginning in February, a new, four-part webinar series on school leadership will feature Sheppard and three other educators who have led academic success in high-poverty schools around the country. The series will also include:
- Jeffrey Litt, leader of one of the highest-achieving charter school networks in New York
- Teri Brecheen, who is helping school leaders throughout Oklahoma as leader of statewide literacy efforts, and
- Sharon Brittingham, who is using her experience leading high-poverty schools in Delaware to support principals in her state.
Their backgrounds and situations could hardly be more different: One is known as the “Lion of the Bronx” because of his fierce work on behalf of some of New York City’s most vulnerable students; the other two helped their rural, high-poverty schools become some of the top performers in their states. Today, all are working to help other principals work to improve their schools based on their own experiences.
