#TeachDiverse: Black Teachers for More Than Just Black Students

This week, we participated in The Hechinger Report’s Twitter chat on teacher diversity, along with Andre Perry, Christopher Emdin, José Vilson, and the National Council on Teacher Quality.
We talked about what we learned from our focus groups with 150 Black teachers, who shared the challenges they face in classrooms and schools.
Some of the major themes from yesterday’s chat also mirrored those that we heard from teachers in our focus groups, including:
- Teachers who have a penchant for teaching and serving Black students well find themselves restricted to only teaching Black students; and
- Teachers feel limited to acting as disciplinarians instead of being respected for their ability to manage their classrooms.
